Kupu Hou Organic Farm

About Us

Kupu Hou Organic Farm is a USDA Certified Organic farm managed with permaculture ethics in the Kula district of Maui, Hawaii. We specialize in Kula Maui MokkaTM coffee and also sell fresh organic produce.   Sitting at 1,800 elevation with bi-coastal views the farm is in an ideal area for living as well as farming.

The owners, James and Cheryl Jones, always had organic home gardens while raising their children.  As medical professionals, they long understood the importance of organics, non-GMO foods, and the interrelated nature of all life.  Jim is a medical doctor trained in New York and San Francisco.  He practiced Nephrology in Denver and Maui while also focusing on medical education.  Cheryl was an ICU nurse in San Francisco and then practiced Cranial Sacral therapy for 15 years.  Later she obtained a PhD in Higher Education and Social Change in Berkeley, CA.  Her desire to have a positive impact on individual, as well as environmental health and wellness, led her to focus on organic farming and permaculture.  She initially trained in permaculture in 1998 with some of Bill Mollison's first teachers.  Cheryl re-certified with Geoff Lawton as the importance of creating food forests, wherever possible, became an added life goal.  She believes self-sufficient agriculture, small farms, and educational projects for children and young people while supporting soil health are what she is called to do.   Cheryl has served as a consultant to small farms, community gardens, non-profit organizations, and elementary schools in California and Arizona while continuing to develop Kupu Hou Permaculture Organic Farm, LLC.

The onsite farm manager, Andrew MacDonald-Urango, hails from coastal California and has a degree in Environmental and Agricultural Plant Sciences with an emphasis on fruit trees & entomology. With five years of professional experience in permaculture design and a deep understanding of whole systems thinking, he is the ideal caretakers of this serene piece of paradise.  Together with his partner Paige, Kupu Hou is offering fresh, seasonal produce for sale at farmers markets. Come say hi on Wednesdays at the Wai Puna Chapel from 8-1am or the Upcountry Farmers Market on Saturdays from 7-11am!

Additionally, we are members of the Hawaii Farmers Union United, Hawaii Farm Bureau and Maui Coffee Association, and are certified organic by International Organic Services, Inc. (ICS).  Our papaya are tissue tested to guarantee that they are Non-GMO.
